Default Rear end sound?

My 2001 slt 5.9 has a whining noise coming from it. If I speed up the noise speeds up if I slow down the noise slows down. Someone said it needs rear differental oil. Checked it full. Then someone said the bearings replaced the rear driver side. Noise still there. What can it be? Also the service 4wheel drive light is on but I was told it's not a 4wheel drive. Please please someone point me in the right direction. Thank you all!

I think you should take it in and see if it is or is not a 4X4.

If the sound is coming from the front then most likely the issue is a front wheel bearing. If it is from the back then a rear differential bearing somewhere.

There is also a TSB on a 4 wheel drive light without it being a 4X4 and it might be your year? master tech posted one in the Durango 1st gen section.

Welcome to DF
Are you sure the bearing sound is coming from the rear diff? And do you know if you have a LSD rear diff, If you don't know. Raise the back end with a jack, then spin the rear tires,if both rear tire spin in the same direction. Then you have a Limited Slip Diff (LSD). At this point you would want to remove the inspection cover on the diff and ck for brolen clips from LSD clutches. If they are broken then you need to replace the carrier and all bearings and yes the pinion bearings too. Oh here is the TSB for the 4x4 lite.

Could be a U-joint or output bearing on the trans. If it is further up get someone to stand outside and see if you can nail down the sound. Could be a wheel bearing, but we could do this all day. We really need to first locate the sound.
