2 Inch Lift
So a while back i was talking to mrwilliwizard on youtube and he told me he got a 2 inch lift done for 80 bucks.
He did a torsion crank in the front and a rear shackle lift in the back. I wanna do this as well. And I'm not much of a mechanic but i think i can do this project myself. My question is, is this difficult to do? also where are the torsion bar's bolts located so i can give them a few cranks? Also is this a sturdy lift? i don't want my durango falling apart because its a bad way to do a lift or because i did it wrong. what do you guys think? |
it is a perfectly acceptable way to lift the truck and will hold up, the torsion bar bolts are on the frame back from the wheels, just follow the t-bars and you will find the bolts, and as long as you have some patience, and the right tools you shouldnt have too much trouble doing this job
|
Torsion/shackle 2 inch lift
Also will i need a realignment for my tires afterward?
|
How far back from the wheels are the torsion bar bolts? if i start from the frame connecting to the front wheel and move inwards how far inwards am i going? 1-2 ft? also is it the only large bolt there? don't want to get it confused with something else.
I was just under my truck and found two possible bolts. the one i think it is, is facing directly towards the ground and is a tad further towards the front of the truck off the frame from the wheels. is this correct? Anyone have a picture of the torsion bar bolt and ots surroundings so i can get a good look at it? also this just hit me now. I'm in a state where we have 5-6 months of snow (Minnesota) and there is a lot of rust on the bolts will this give me a problem? or will WD-40/liquid wrench take care of this? |
wd40 SHOULD take care of the rust just fine, its not IN it is BACK, follow the frame back and see where it and the T-bars meet, should be the only bolt there
and yes it will need to be aligned whenever you touch the front suspension (except for shocks, they dont require alignment :D) |
so its a little further towards the rear of the car? just a little bit from where the wheels are? i'll go take another look. and i'm assuming these are gonna be large 5/8-3/4 inch by 6 inch bolts? not some small thin little ones with small hex heads?
|
you would be correct (im not sure on the size, but they are bigger than most)
|
Alright thanks man! I'm gonna go take another look under my truck. I'll try to take a video or a couple pictures of it underneath there and I'll post it to this thread. then you guys can tell me if i found it.
I don't know if i will be able to do it tonight though. possibly tomorrow morning. or else I'll make a fresh thread for it. thanks man, appreciate it! |
Look here under T/S lift: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...wers-faqs.html
|
You can always count on hydrashocker to find you a link to a page where your question is being answered!
|
Well thanks!
There is a lot of info in that section about 4 down on T/S Lifts! |
Yeah i read through one of them. It did help. it gives me a "junior rookie" a good look at the work I'll be doing. I also found the torsion bars bolts and have taken a good look at the shackles setup. I have one quick question for you. This is something i thought while i was reading.
It never mentions "clearly" that you need to jack up the rear end of the truck when taking out the rear shackles. Do i have to lift up the back end when removing the shackles? or is it ok still on the ground? i would think it needs to be lifted or the weight would drop? |
You must raise the truck by lifting from the frame to take the load off!
Once the load is off then the tire will come off the ground. Simply lower JUST enough to alow the rear wheel to touch the ground. Then go at it. You MUST releive the pressure off the suspendion. The rear bumper of the truck will be high in the air with the wheels just bearly touching. |
I see so don't lift it off the ground but get the jack in there and crank it up high but not letting the tire leave the ground. Alright man. Also with a 2 inch lift what do you think is the biggest tire i can get in there without rub? maybe a 32x10.5? I was hoping for a wider tire though like a 32x11.5 maybe even a 31x11.5 if it doesn't start to look small with the lift.
|
i was just at a big 4x4 place called "hooze 4x4" and they told me that they don't make rear shackles to lift durango's because durango's don't ride well lifted. They said that's why you never see lifted durango's. I was hoping to buy shackles from them but they don't carry them. Any ideas on what i can do guys? obviously just cranking the torsion bars wont do much anything for me. I really would like to get larger tires on my durango! 32x11.5!!
|
I just found some shackles for 37 bucks! they're more universal and will fit. I brought them down to "hooze 4x4" and they said they will fit. So i got some shackles now need to install them. Also if i do crank the torsion bar up 2 inches how stiff will the ride get? also can the front tires be properly aligned after ward's?
|
ok well you need to STOP going to hooze 4x4, they are clearly idiots if they wont carry parts to lift a truck bc 'lifting it makes it ride poorly', that is true of ANY vehicle, not just durangos, and btw there are ALOT of lifted durangos around here, dont know why you wouldnt have any around you, but find a new off-road/4x4 shop bc this one is too sketchy/full of idiots
|
yeah I'm done at hooze, they might be specialists but i have seen enough durango's lifted. on video's in person and by word of mouth. I got the shackles but another thing i noticed is on the drivers side the hitch is some what in the way of the bolt. on the upper part of the stock shackle. Any thoughts on that?
|
you might have to take the hitch off and then put it on later after you finish putting the lif ton it
|
yeah i might have to. I'm hoping i wont have to but that might be the case. Well i guess i'll have to see. Also after i get my alignment and my wheels are aligned the alignment will last right? i mean they stay pretty aligned now you don't think they will fall out of alignment easier after the lift do you?
|
if you are doing the t/s lift you will have to get it aligned after you crank the torsion bars, anytime the front suspension geometry changes the alignment needs to be adjusted
|
Right, you told me that man. I'm just curious to know if even after the alignment will I need another alignment like a year later? i mean my alignment now is good. once the lift I'll have it adjusted. Will i need another one in a year or so?
|
depends on what kind of **** you hit off-roading, some places say you should get it aligned every time you rotate the tires, others say every time you get a new set of tires, i tend to listen to the second group, and i get it aligned every time i get new tires on it, but in btwn i just let it go, so unless you change or damage something, or notice it pulling or wearing tires oddly your alignment SHOULD be good to go for quite a while
|
Yeah you know i haven't actually done any off roading with her yet. I'd like to you know? I'm gonna get some all terrain tires. Nothing fancy but something a little more aggressive then what i got now. maybe some cooper discoverer atr's
http://www.walkertireco.com/*widgets...F=/gallery.nxg or maybe some Yokohama geolander at-s http://www.ucctirefactory.com/shop/p...age.php?pID=35 I don't know yet. But something! Well i think i can manage to get this lift done now. i dont need any torsion keys or anything. I have plenty to work with. It needs 8 clockwise turns on each torsion bar bolt correct? I'll post some before and after pictures of it for you guys! |
yup go for it, kind hard to screw up, just make sure to mark the torsion bolts with whiteout or something similar to aid with the counting

The Pepboys site has pics. |
Well the tire i have now is the Goodyear fortera silent armor. Ride is extremely smooth and i'd say almost no noise at all. But horrible traction now that i'm down to about 6/32 tread which is apparently half tread. So i'm gonna try to get through this winter and obviously next summer. But those are the tires i'm looking at.
I've also seen tires on a durango that say "durango" on the tire. anyone know who makes those? This guy has some durango tires on his durango: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmPrEpmzqkc |
You can buy Belltech 6400 Shackles http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BEL-6400 for like $54.
Anyway, you will need a alignment after the T/S lift. What I do is buy a Lifetime Alignment from Firestone for about $150 and I can have done when ever I want! In fact I bought one again for my Ram so I can have it done when ever I want. I also had it on my Durango. If you buy one it is usually like $80 just for one so you pay less than 2 and have it done when ever! |
I've already got some shackles in my possession. And as far as that 150dollar alignment thing i might check that out because its not a bad deal.
