Won't start, bad fuel pump?

So I had to have my 2003 4.7L towed to the dealership last Friday because it would not start. It started briefly but was running rough and then died. After that it would just turn over constantly but not start. The dealership looked at it and told me after the tech banged on the bottom of the tank a few times, it started and then cranked several times after that. So I went and picked it up and had no issues that evening. The following night, I came out of the movies and had the same issue, so I crawled under, banged the tank a couple of times and it started. Same thing when I tried to leave for work this morning.

Could trash in the tank cause this or should I go ahead and order a new fuel pump off eBay etc? Dealership wants like $450 for a re-manufactured pump and about $200 in labor to replace it. EEEK.

Thoughts?

definitely sounds like a bad fuel pump, but i want to know what the fuel pressure is when it wont start, if it is below 45 psi then definitely a pump problem

Unfortunately $450 sounds about right. You could change fairly easy and with only a basic tool set. Couple straps, couple hoses, and pop out the pump. But take the gas out of the tank first so it will be much lighter.
