Something's wrong with the bass
I recently bought a 2000 Durango from a friend, it's only problem is, the bass doesn't work very well, when i leave it about mid-way, the music is fine, but as soon as I turn it up a little it sounds crappy. Any idea how to fix this? I really don't know much about fixing cars, so any help is appreciated.

Are the speakers all blown? Probably. Easy to pull the door panels to see.
Stocker speakers don't last too long. Just spent all day replacing mine on my 2nd Durango. IndyDurango |
How do you tell if they are blown? wouldn't they not work at all then?

Pull the door panels and look. VERY common to find them totally deteriorated all around the cone.
They will still work, poorly... hence your original post. |

IndyDurango what ones are a direct fit to the factory ones? |
For a little more info: If your D has the factory-installed BOSE system, the speakers are wired strangely back to the head unit, so if you do have the BOSE system and the speakers go, you'll need a new head unit and wiring, which can be tricky.
This aside, if it is your speakers, you should see a broken rubber seal along the outside. This can cause a loss in bass but not upper tones. |
I think our 1st generation durangos are Infinity systems. NOT BOSE.

Mine were also blown (all of them). I just went to an Auto Audio shop that I find on the road :D and replaced all of them with Alpine's... Now it's excellent.
