4.7 rebuild options
Hi all, just registered to the forum!
I am going to rebuild the 4.7 engine in my 2000 Durango. In addition to DD I tow a 4000#TT with it, the engine is adequate, barely, and would like some more low to mid range torque. I don't want to swap in a different type of engine, 5.9, 5.7, too much involved.
The truck has 3.55 gears, I intend to replace these with 3.92 gears and have the auto trans updated to a 5 spd. in addition to the engine rebuild.
I am seeking info on improving the mid range torque in the 4.7. What ideas do you have for this?
Thanks!
Rick

I don't know how many miles you've got on yours, my 4.7 dropped a valve seat air 203,000, I chose to replace it with one pre-rebuilt by an engine rebuilder and installed by someone else (the shops that said they'd take my engine out and rebuild it then put it back in wanted more than what the engine swap cost me with a reman. engine), engine and transmission replacement are the only two repairs I've had someone else do. But anyway, I bought the truck with 112,000 miles on it, and it never had as much power as this new engine in it now has. If you're rebuilding it yourself there are many things you can do, different cams would be my first thought, but there are plenty of things you can do internally and with tuning.
Coming from someone who also did the Jeep Grand Cherokee TCM swap, it will only help you out on highway cruising, as the 5th gear is a second overdrive, won't really change anything for the towing, as I believe you're not even supposed to tow in OD, I've always been told you should push the OD OFF button when towing.
