RE: 99 durrango speedometer dont work

Typically, this is caused by a faulty rear wheel speed sensor. This is mounted on top of the rear axle.

Is the Rear Speed Sensor the same as the Speed sensor that is in the front? Cause I just bought that part, but it in the front of the tranny, and ya, it didn't do anything... Can i just take the new part and put it in the back? If i can even find it... lol.. which I have not been able too as of yet.

Thanks in advance guys.

I'm not sure of whether or not it is the same part but from what I've read you should just change both. The speed sensor that you are looking for is on the rear diff opposite of the cover.

Thanks Green! Yea, I Think that i changed the front one, but still had the lights and all that good stuff on. But the rear one looks like it might be different. But not sure. I can't get it out yet. I unbolted the metal holder thing, but can not seem to get the sensor out. I should take a pic and post it here so everyone knows what Im talkin about. I am just confused on the whole thing. The Front sensor took me like 5 min to change, this rear one has been a pain in the butt!!1

The two are different. I know cause both broke on me within a month! The rear sensor is the one that usually makes the ABS light come on and futzes up the speedometer. The one on the tranny, in my case, made the tranny shift really late, and lit up the Check Engine light.

So, you need to change the rear sensor, on top of the diff and YES it is a different sensor. Not expensive though.

Here's the rear diff sensor and instructions: Mopar part #56028187AE.
Disconnect negative battery terminal
2. Remove 13 MM top using deep box wrench. Remove the cable bracket attached at this point and move out of the way slightly.
3. Remove 14 MM bottom nut/bolt using deep box wrench.
4. Press connector with thumb and pull connector off sensor (2 wires)
5. Wiggle sensor up along with the metal bracket that goes around the sensor.
6. Dip finger in hole and put differential oil on O ring on new sensor
7. Push sensor new in metal bracket and bolt in.
8. Put ignition key in and turn to on position for 30 seconds. Step on the brake pedal at this point to put a current drain on the computer system (assures a reset condition)
9. Reconnect negative post of car battery
10. Important Note: the fault (ABS and brake) did not go out until I started to drive the car (about 10 seconds). Just setting still, the light did not go out which made me concern that this did not repair the problem. But it did.
