Default 98 Durango likes to stall in 2nd gear.

I have a 98 Durango 5.2liter that likes to stall or hang-up in second gear. Usually, it will run up to about 3K rpm (if I remember right)before dropping back down to the next gear. I've been letting off on the gas about the time I know it should be shifting to help it along.Could it be that there's a sensor out? I'm not familiar with tranny's so anyideas on where to start looking would be very helpful. Thanks!

My 98 does the same thing. Thinking about getting a trans flush and filter to see if that helps.

Be sure to check your tranny fluid level/condition. Improper fluid level is the source of 90% of transmission problems.

Ok, I'm an idot. Where's the tranny dipstick located?

All the way in the back of the engine compartment (by the windshield/firewall), on the passenger side. Big yellow handle that says Trans Fluid.

Should be against the firewall, near the back of the engine. As youare looking in the hood from front to back, should be just to the left of the oil dipstick behind the air filter-intake manifold ducting. The haynes manual diagram shows it next to the receiver/drier/Accumulator. If all else fails, look for the yellow dipstick marked "TRANS FLUID"

Thanks for humoring me. If I remember right, the last time I looked for it I couldn't find it.

Remember one thing when you check the level it should be hot with the engine running. Run it through all of your gears leaving it on each gear for a couple seconds then put it in neutral and put on the e-brake. that will give you an accurate reading on your fluid level.

Thanks guys, it must have been my Jeep that I had trouble locating the dipstick on cuzI got home and looked under the Durango hood and it was right there. Anyway, I'll recheck the level while it's running like you suggested. I checked it 20min after it had been run and turned off and the stick said the level was good, right at the full mark. Just out of curiosity, what color should the fluid be, or in other words, how would I know if it were bad and needing to be changed?
