water pump and timing belt

water pump and timing belt
I've recently bought a 98 Neon,2.0.When I purchased it I knew it had only 74,000 miles on it,but the water pump was bad.Took it apart, only to find that the timing belt was broke, because the water pump locked up.I'm not sure if or how long the car might have ran after the belt broke. What could I be getting myslef into, and what should I check for.The book says not to run the car without a timing belt.Help please,I'm a mechanic by trade, just never have messed with any of these before.

RE: water pump and timing belt
Um, no offence, but, your a mechanic and dont know that you cant run a car without a timing belt? The odds are you bent some valves. Do a leak down test to see or just take the head off. Then get some new valves or a reman head, new water pump, timing belt, and head gasket set.
