I know when it comes to the Chevy transmissions, the tailshaft length is different. The 4wd trans the shaft is extremely short past the case, for mating to the transfer case. Where as the 2wd trans the tailshaft is about 6" or so past the case, and has a tail shaft housing, that the rear slip yoke fits into. I know the Jeeps are the same way, with the 231 transfer case. From what I can tell, my 93 4wd Ram has a 241 transfer case, which is the 231's big brother.
So I'd say that's it's safe to assume, that the tail shaft length will be different, and is most likely the deal killer.
