Is my torque converter bad

Bought an 85 d150 shortbed yesterday and when i was almost home it all of a sudden quit driving and started revving up when i hit the gas in all gears i had it towed home and i got it to go backwards then i hit the brakes and i had the same problem as earlier after about an hour it went forward and i had yet again the same problem and now if its not in park it has a squealing noise from right behind the motor and when i would go the tires would spin the stop and then i would go and on the way home going up hills it would like loose power even if i hit the accelerator

Not sure if this would help but have you checked the trans fluid

might seem like a waste of fluid now but did you pull off the pan to the tranny and check the filter to see of its clogged?

Thank you for the idea to check the filter the previous owner was supposed to have changed it but I had never seen a worse clogged filter in my life
