heavier duty axles
 

i want to put heavier duty axles on my truck, but i dont have enough to spend on dana 60s. i was thinking of putting some 8 lug axles off a Chevy or something. maybe some 6 lug 3/4 tons. has anyone ever done that? do they mount right up or do i have to change a lot of stuff.

btw i have a 75 w100 with a 4 in lift.. has a dana 44 in the front and chrysler 9.25 in the rear.

i just found out that the 9.25 is a pretty good axle.. i dont do any really hard wheeling, but i want something that wont break on me. i do go mudding a lot though. whats your opinion on the 9.25? and if you think i should replace the 44 what should i replace it with? if i keep the 5 lug 9.25 in the rear it would have to be a 5 lug axle in the front.

The 9.25 is not a bad axle it is just poorly designed and is known for having problems.

Your only real choice is D60's in the front. You can use one from any 77-93 Dodge. You can also use one from a Chevy but you have to bow the springs to bolt it in since their spring perches are slightly narrower than a Dodge.

As for the rear; the only bolt in option is a D60 or D70 from a 77-93 Dodge. You can use a GM 14-bolt but you have move the spring perches.

Nothing else is "bolt in" other than a D44 HD from a 3/4 ton Dodge.

You should be able to find a rear D60 for $200-400 a front D60 can run anywhere from $400-1,200. Right now on www.car-part.com there are some front d60's for as low as $250

No matter what you install you are going to have to change some things; drive shafts will need to be modified, brake lines hoses might need to be modified, but that is about it.
