Question tranny swap, can i use this!?

hi, I want to try and put a newer 2nd gen auto trans with an overdrive in my 89 w150, Is this possible? I didn't know if there is a kit, has anyone tried this before? if so how difficult and expensive was it? or am I just wasting my time. thank you.

Well... Anything can be done. I swapped wiring harness, fuel injected engine, trans, computer and everything into my '78. Is it worth it, is the real question. Overdrive is great, but the 46re's that they put in the second gen dodges don't have a great track record. They are often rebuilt or replaced before 100k miles. Obviously there are exceptions, but point is... They suck. A more direct answer to your question is this: Yes. It can and has been done. There are stand-alone harness and computer setups that allow it, or you could modify a factory one to work. I wouldn't bother with it unless you took the fuel injected engine as well, and just used the whole harness and computer from the same truck. Much easier that way in my opinion.

If you really want O/D just do an a518 or a 5 speed swap

Prior to 1996 the 2nd gens used 46Rh.
The difference between the 2 is the RH is hydraulic governor to control shifts just like the 727.
The RE is electronic governor that requires computer to shift.
You can put the RH behind your 318 or 360 and use this kit form PATC to control OD and TC lockup, all other shifts will happen just like a 727. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/SwapInformation.htm
Is your truck manual trans now? If so you will need the flexplate that is appropiate to the engine you have.
One is externaly balanced the other is internal balance.

thanks guys, I have heard of the 518 trans I just cant seem to find the right on, ive only found ones for diesels or ones built for high performance applications with the price tag to match. so if anyone knows where I can find a good 518 for a decent price that would be the best match for a 318 please let me know, also could use some pointers on the swap just so I know what I will need to make it go as easy as possible. Thanks again!

AS far as parts go, what i listed above and a TC.
May need to different drive shaft.
As far as where to buy can try local trans shop or a few of the 2nd gen guys have these trans and love them. http://transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm

I second this... But lean towards the 5 speed.
