Engine rebuild

Hey guys need some help?? This is my first restoration project I have a 1974 d-100 3 on the tree with a 225 slant six and I'm wanting to put some horsepower into rather then the dog it is. Looking at boring and honing the cylinders new cam different carb and need some advice. Not looking for crazy power something that will get up and go but nothing overkill!! I don't want a 10 second car but a nice looping cam reliable and some get up and go. Advice please??

What do you think about swapping in a V8? Maybe a 360 LA block?
