Default Looking at a 1993 Cummins D350

Are these things any good? I remember changing a transmission in one 20 years ago and it only lasted a week.

This one appears to be a summer only truck that has had mechanical inspections on an annual basis. It needs a door and fenders. Only has 221,000 km (138,000 miles).
Thanks, Steve

it looks ok but there is no real good pictures of the cab supports so hard to say. if it will pass a safety as is then it will likely be a good truck. the transmission should last if they are not abused. when installing a rebuilt transmission in these things you got to keep the transmission fluid topped up after install or you can kill them and they need a lot of fluid. i think we dumped 16-17 quarts into the trans that we installed in my buddies 91 and it barely got it to the low line with it running in neutral for short periods of time to make sure we didn't burn up the new trans. so far it has been pretty good and he uses his truck pretty hard since it is his work truck and weighs 8000lbs by itself. what part of Ontario are you from?

I'll have to swing back and have a look at the cab mounts, I didn't think of them. The garage hasn't looked it over yet and I haven't seen under the hood either. It's weird that the truck's strut bars are installed in the opposite direction of the van's (I have a 1991 B250).
I'm in the Kingston and Ottawa Valley areas.

cab mounts and floors are about the biggest issue these trucks have. usually they like to rot out and finding a decent cab can be a bit difficult even tho most diesels are usually a bit better taken care of. strut rods look normal for a truck. looks like some basic maintenance as been done to the front end since it has a new center link.

i guess that may be why i haven't seen that truck pop up on kijiji. definitely a bit farther than i usually look for trucks.

Friend of mine had one..... pretty much same configuration. The truck would pull anything you put behind it, and unloaded would get over 20 mpg.......

they are fun trucks especially if you upgrade them but in stock form they are a bit sluggish. i know my buddies 91 is a lot more fun to drive than his 92 but his 91 has a lot more money put into it than his 92. the throttle response almost feels like a fuel injected vehicle and not needing a lot to get moving even with a load

What is the situation with intercoolers? The build sheet does not mention one but I find it strange that it would be an option. Some parts seem to be for intercooled trucks and some for non-intercooled.
I also remember there being a problem with the transmissions holding park. I checked for recalls but didn't see anything...was that still an issue in 1993? I knew a guy that nearly got ran over by one of these trucks when it rolled down a hill after breaking out of park.
Lastly, is it conceivable to change a flat tire on the side of the road? It's missing the spare wheel and I assume you would need a 3-ton jack and 10-foot bar to get the wheels off? My boss who had one was a licensed mechanic and he tried to chain on a spare tire once rather than change it on the side of the road. He got pretty far before the chain broke.
Thanks again, Steve

not all 91's are intercooled. i believe all 91.5's and newer are intercooled.

really sounds like you have hung around a lot of people who have abused their trucks. park paws are not an issue unless you have damaged it.

you really only need 4 tires to drive down the road so technically you always have 2 spares at all times lol. a 3 ton jack wouldn't be a bad idea but the stock jack would likely do the job needed along with a good tire iron and not one of them junky ones. my dad has had the same tire iron for as long as i can remember and it always did the job on his 3/4 ton trucks. i have even watched him snap lug nuts off a vehicle with it when i was young.
