Stand alone electronic ignition

Computer is shot. Shop told me it couldn't be fixed. No spark at plugs. Spark at coil.
Soooo, I think my only option is to covert to the older style electronic ignition.
Anyone done this? Thoughts?

'90 D250 auto fed emissions engine code Z.

Erm, if the coil is firing, but not the plugs, then you have a wire, distributor cap, or rotor issue. The ECM is doing it's job.

4990Ram 06-12-2019 01:58 PM

New wires, cap and rotor.
According to the FSM my ECM is bad.
Sent it out to be repaired and it can't be fixed.

If the coil is firing, the ecm is doing its job. If the spark isn't getting to the plugs, the ECM has nothing to do with that. It fires the coil. That's it.

sounds like you need a new shop if you got spark at the coil but none at the plugs and they can't fix it.

4990Ram 06-12-2019 06:32 PM

It's not at a shop. I followed the trouble shooting sequence in the FSM.
Then sent the ECM to a company in FL. I got an email from them yesterday
saying the ECM can't be repaired.

The FSM says the ECM is/was bad.

I'm now trying to find a way to get the truck running.
I was told swapping to the old style ignition was the way to go.

How about getting another ECM IF it is indeed bad? You can use a stand alone ignition but what about throttle body injection? Carb swap?

crazzywolfie 06-12-2019 10:14 PM

you need more than a ignition to run a 88 and newer truck. what about CARDONE798936?

4990Ram 06-13-2019 12:25 AM

79-8936 is for '91 or '92.

I thought they were year specific?

crazzywolfie 06-13-2019 12:30 AM

nothing really changed that much. TBI is TBI. it wouldn't surprise me if a 318 or 239 computer would work since at the end of the day it is just 2 injectors firing fuel into the engine and the o2 sensor correcting as needed once warm enough.
