Coolant dripping on starter motor
I have an 84 D150 2wd, just purchased in january and arrived at my place about 4 weeks ago. Have lots of issues to attend to not the least o which is the chassis being cracked at steering box mount point.
However question for today is what is the most likely source of coolant leaking on left side of engine above starter motor (eng is 318) I'm guessing its an expansion plug that has given up but just wondering, on brief inspection can't see too much down there. Thanks in advance |

Yep, thanks Crazzy
I reckon its gonna be the plug at the rear of the left hand cylinder head. What are the chances of replacing that without removing the head ? |
It's possible, just a bit difficult. Very limited space there..... If you drop the trans cross member, so you can lower the tail of the trans, it will give you better access. (from underneath.....)

Yep, thanks for that, def an option. The rate I'm pulling things apart at the moment could even be plucking the engine out

it really isn't that hard to pull the engine/trans and yank it all out especially on a carbed engine. pulled engine/transmission out of my old 91 in like 2 hours and that includes removing the wiring harness/computer. if you have 1 fail it would likely be best to replace all the ones on the back side of the engine. the rest you can replace at your discression but at least the rest should be able to be replaced with engine in the truck but the ones in the back clearly require more effort to get at. probably also worth replacing the rear main seal also at the same time. it most likely leaks and it would be easier to replace with the engine out of the truck.

Yeah, if there is ONE dripping, you can bet the rest aren't in much better shape. If you pull the motor, replace them ALL, get the good brass fellers. Special order them if you have to.

Thanks Guys, that was my thought also. I have ordered a full set of plugs so may well just pull the engine and trans out.
My biggest worry is when I start a new project, get real keen at the start and somewhere down the track lose interest and end up with another half done project. I gotta try and keep focused on this one. |
