89 Ram overdrive help
Hi, my uncle just purchased a 1989 dodge ram . He's got a few vehicles and hes just messing around with this one, as its in really good shape and he basically got it for nothing. He was asking about putting a overdrive transmission into it to help its MPG. Anyway, he wants to know what Overdrive transmission will fit in his truck, and what is the Newest year that he can get this transmission out of a dodge?
Thanks alot. |
RE: 89 Ram overdrive help
46rh would probably work, might need to rig something for the OD though. Not sure when they switched over to the 46re. Otherwise it'll be an a999 or a904 or whatever the heck they are. The a727 is a tough tranny though.

The one in my Ramcharger finally failed last winter with 130k on it. The reverse band shattered. That may not seem like a lot of miles, but the last 40k put on the truck were STRICTLY plowing miles which are HARD on a transmission. It plowed snow for 16 years and never skipped a beat. Time to find a shortbox Ram to replace it :( |
RE: 89 Ram overdrive help
My 727 made it about 220k miles before it grenaded, but putting 7000 lbs in the bed as well as towing the takiuchi (sp) front loader probably had something to do with it.

Heres a crazy question. How impossible would it be to put a 46rh behind a 360 in a 1974 4x4?
|
It wouldn't be crazy. As was mentioned six years ago, other than actually making it fit, the only exceptional part would be controlling the overdrive. Here is the scoop. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/SwapInformation.htm
