Noise gone, pulley not aligned with the others. I thought the pump would have been a bolt in thing with no adjustment. Lined up the pulley, problem solved.
Now my AC compressor has a bad clutch rotor bearing and it seems that only the dealer carries these for $400... but that's another story.
Hey! I thought Ricardo Monteblan was the Cordoba man... LOL

i don't know the exact model you are talking about with taht A/C clut on truck.

But You can buy JUST the clutch kit - i did a quick search on eBay and found this one for 67.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ram-3...Q5fAccessories

i am sure if you look just a second longer than I did you can find one for your specific need and just install the new clutch kit - save you mad dollars. might even be able to do it while it's on the truck so you save your freon as well.

just a thought. Hope it helps.

That's not it, but thanks anyway. Nobody seems to have the kit for this except the dealer. I searched through e-bay and only found complete compressors that are like mine, no kits.

Exclamation Noise is common on AC compressors!

Okay,

Since I was the one who opened this thread citing of noise and I have driven this car many miles since I bought it when it had 20,000+ miles and now it just turned 57,000 miles yesterday, I can honestly say that the AC Compressor is the one that makes lots of noise or rumbling sound when you do not have the radio ON!

I did rent a 2010 Dodge Avenger R/T in Birmingham, Alabama last year and drove it all the way to Huntsville and did not pay too much attention to see if that model year had the same sound as mine.

All I can say is that my mechanic being an AC Specialist has informed me that Dodge AC compressors do have a characteristic of making rumbling sounds when the vehicle is at idle and especially when you take your foot of the Gas petal and allow it to coast to a stop. Once the speed sensors reach the required down shift action you certainly can hear the AC compressor RPMs increase and the rumbling sound much more apparent.

Sorry, I did not want this thread to become some kind of witch hunt about all other components as I am certain that the type of bearings used by various spinning components will make sounds!

Default No need to replace the whole alternator

it was that crappy alternator! yeah - it was working - no test detected it being bad - but in 2007 in this 2.4L engine and the 1.8L they used a weird alternator pulley - it has some kind of bogus bearing system in it - sealed up in there. the pulley alone costs about 85 bucks on eBay.

best to just get a new alternator though. guess what they cost! 240.00 for a stinking alternator! Yeah... and I had to figure out what it was on my own. the dodge house didn't even know. they wanted almost 1,000.00 to replace it out of warranty. 54K on this car.

it really is a bummer to replace the alternator - doing it in the driveway in january with the north winds blowing in your crack doesn't help either - you have to remove two pulley's and the power steering pump , unbolt the winshield washer tank - take the passenger side wheel off - unbolt the wheel well plastics ( Two of them ) - good luck getting that last screw behind the A/C condensers!

also - there is no belt route pattern under the hood so you best plot that out before you take that belt off.

The only way to be sure of where the noise was coming from is to spin that pulley outside of the car, i tried to get autozone to test it for e but they said the alternator model was too new and they did not have a plug for it, so I just opened my VW beetle engine lid and jammed it into the spinning belt - WA LAA! it started to get off balance when it hit a certain RPM and got way worse when RPMs increased. to teh point where the alternator was getting hit by the pulley. the center shaft was wobbling causing a whirring sound and the contact the pulley was making with the body of the alternator was clanking super fast causing the diesel engine sound.

I have no doubt this will fail again, it seems to be designed to fail, i made sure to buy a lifetime warranty alternator.

I have seen this problem posted NOWHERE online at all. yet the Dodge house said its Common. spread the word if you like. i am glad I am done with is problem. LOL

The noise is actually from the "decoupler pulley" on the front of the alternator. The part is available online for around $45. I got mine from Auto Parts and Stuff. Gates p/n 37018P $44.89 plus shipping. Search YouTube for a video titled "2008 Dodge Avenger engine noise fix Alternator "decoupler pulley".

Yup. i think i mentioned that, happened again though already 12K miles doen the road. I bout a lifetime guarantee alternator though so I just pulled it out and took it back.

had the old one checked (The first one that was stock ) and it was bad, barley charging and that pulley comes with the alternator, I never took one off to mess with it. so when i took the second one in to collect on my lifetime warranty it tested bad as well. This ones doing fine again but if it goes out I can just yank it out and get a new one. i think it was toatlly worth it. You have to take that alternator out to get to that pulley anyway right? and it is hard to remove without damaging it? seems liek I am getting to be a pro alternator remover , i pulled this second one and put the new one in in about 1 1/2 hours in teh criveway. It is a pain, don't get me wrong. but when your battery fries because your alternator went out after you just fixed the pulley, seems like that day will suck. eh?

I did end up having to replace the battery. that was no fun either. LOL i have everything working now, I just have the one problem left that I cannot figure out. why my windshield wipers go off all by them selves occasionally when i use the turn signals. sprays and everything. it's an incredible shock sometimes. I mean it blinds you totally while making the turn for seconds. the wipers are on the other arm on the right, the signals on the left. I can't find a answer to this one.

hey! great video. that would have been handy. LOL

You won't believe this probably but i got that alternator out through the top both times.

Also, I took that wheel off both times because i am Huge and it just seemed like I didnt have enough room to get to those bolts with the wheel on.

here is 1 other funny thing. the video is great, don't get me wrong. butt he battery can be disconnected from the top side up on the fire wall. just pop that red cap off and you will see the terminal that runs t the battery and off in the other direction to the components. undo that bolt up there and poof You have disconnected the battery.

I wish I had that vid to watch before i did this but i am good now. LOL awesome job guys.
