Loud?
 

I have a new to me 2013 Avenger with 2.4 liters of screaming fury under the hood.This is my first 4 cylinder engine so I'm not sure what to expect exactly in regards to engine noise.At first I didn't think too much about it, but as I get used to the car, the more I notice how noisy that little guy under the hood really is, especially when I first start it up in the mornings.As it comes up to operating temperature it quiets down a little, but it still is louder than I thought it was when I first got the car. Do you other 2.4 liter owners have the same observation?

lol yeah I have that problem but I have an intake and header lol

I think what he is talking about is the choke and then the thermostat opening after start up.. for me on cold days when I am waiting for my car to warm up the RPMS will stay up at about 1.5K then they drop down to about 1K then they will drop down to normal .75K after the engine starts to get warm.

Choke? Cars don't have chokes these days. Thermostat opening up makes no noise.....I can believe the high idle though if that is what he is referring to.

If I had a video camera I would record it. My car does it in the mornings...
If I don't wait for it to warm up before driving off to work it does the same thing...
At 55 MPH it will keep the RPMS up at around 2.5K until the temp gauge shows 1/4 (from cold) and then it will drop down to about 2K RPMS, then after the temp gauge shows the middle temp the RPMS will drop down to 1.5K where it is supposed to be.

not trying to be a wise arse but that's what my car does... I don't know if that's what this guy is talking about or not... Usually in the summer time it doesn't do that...

Sounds more like a transmission issue if your RPMs are fluctuating at a constant 55 mph speed.

Hi, sorry to have been absent. There are two basic noises that I wasn't familiar with, and was questioning. Both are when you start the car in the morning.

The first one, was what I thought to be noisy lifters immediately after starting the engine, but wasn't sure. Now, I think that's what it is, but it goes away within a couple of moments, and I'm not too worried about it.

The second noise is similar in regards to only being noticeable when you first start the engine. I don't know how to describe it, but it sounds different inside the cabin vs. standing outside listening for it. It too goes away after a moment, but when the noise present, it seems to run a little rougher as you drive away. I'm thinking now that these are probably okay, and not symptomatic of a problem I need to fix.

I do like my Avenger, it's a cool little car - even with its little noises. I'm glad I got it, and can see why it draws a following.

If there are no driveability issues, just turm the radio up so you don't hear it. I had the same engine in my previous Journey and it is a little noisy. Just keep an eye on fluid levels, change oil regularly, i.e. keep up with the maintenance, those little engines are quite stout.

That's good to hear. Glad it isn't anything too bad.
