When I bought the truck about a year or so ago, I noticed that the instructions to engage 4 wheel are partially rubbed out.

From what I gather it says...

To engage HI, shift while driving
To engage Lo, Stop, put truck in neutral, shift to 4 low fast and hard. Then put truck to drive.

Does this sound right? I find sometimes it makes a grinding noise. From what i have heard, that is normal. Also seems to pop out of 4wheel with a bang.

(also says do not drive on hard surfaces, its hard on it... must drive on dirt, snow etc.

Whats going on here? And does anyone have a good picture of there instructions on there visor?

 

That's about it for the instructions. Mine does the same, jumps out of 4L but without a bang, but 4H works great...shifts right in a idling speed. My mech told me to shut it off and put it into low, then go, but haven't tried that yet.

 

i thought 4lo needed to go in while truck is slightly in motion? mine pops in/out too, i hardly use it, also check the linkage (i have yet to adjust mine), but this recent snow dump all ive been using is 4hi.....with the 24's LOL

 

Maybe on 95 and later Daks, but up through 93 you have to be stopped and in N to get into 4L...no wueno otherwise...but you can just run at idle speed and slip it into 4H.

 

I dont think you are supposed to shift it fast and hard into 4lo. I always pull with a constant pressure and if it wont go in let the truck roll a little or move it a little then try again! Maybe thats just the way I do it, but who knows. lol. It will tell you in the owners manual of the truck if you still have that!

NV-231 Transfer Case
The NV-231 transfer case offers 4 mode positions. Use the appropriate mode for the conditions described below:

2H
Rear wheel drive high range - Normal street and highway driving.

4H
Four-wheel drive high range - When driving conditions require more traction than two-wheel drive provides.

N
Neutral - Disengages both driving axles. To be used for towing only. See towing instructions for more information.

4L
Four-wheel drive low range - When maximum pulling power is require. Do not exceed 25mph (40kph).

Shifting Procedure

2H to 4H or 4H to 2H
Shifts between 2H and 4H can be done with the vehicle stopped or in motion. With vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelerator pedal after making the shift.

4H to 4L or 4L to 4H

 

I'd personally never engage it while moving even though my manual says I can. Just doesnt sit right with me and seems hard on the truck and why not stop since you gotta slow to around 2 mph anyway. I always stop, put the truck in nuetral, and pull the shifter to whatever I'm putting it into, put the truck in reverse and let it roll a lil, then back to drive and go. Thats just how I was taught and I always have better results like that. No grinding, popping out, or gear clash.

 

I checked my TC fluid today and did the linkage adjustment in the service manual...now it stays in 4L instead of wanting to pop out. I stop dead, put it in N and ease it firmly into 4L then go.
