I can't emphasize enough...
How important it is for you guys to throw an old coat or a blanket or something of the like over the middle of a tow or recovery strap when pulling someone or something out of being stuck!
Most of us "winch guys" have known all along the importance of this, but I'm sure a lot of guys don't know to do this with a recovery strap as well! Stories abound about serious injuries and even deaths resulting from being hit by a flying metal projectile! I just read this today: http://leadercall.com/local/x2238598...freak-accident |
is that to weigh it down in case it breaks?
|
yes, if it breaks or comes loose it will direct all the force downward, harmlessly into the ground. It doesn't take much, I keep an old hoodie in my truck all the time and use it, luckily, I've never had one come loose or break under load...

We always use our Diest 4" poly tow rope, when we can. We never use the hook-rope, if possible, for that exact reason. The 4" poly will stretch and absorb load, instead of springing apart/snapping.
The other old trick, when exerting a high torque, do a rope from vehicle one to a tire, then another rope from tire to vehicle 2 That way the tire will oblong and absorb any shock encounterd. |
I have a small section of chain like 5lb or so.

Damn that sucks. 100% preventable!!
I got hit in the head one time by a tow strap. Thank God the hook broke off and all it was just the strap. I was in high school, we didn't know anything. |
