Klokworx Body Overhaul
so heres the scoop, i finally got a mini truck and its the dakota what i wanted. my plans for this are big but will come a little bit at a time and i cant promise myself they will all be accomplished, perhaps alternatives will pursue. I will update this thread as i go along
heres the truck http://imageshack.us/a/img585/5515/i...0503192452.jpg im the kinda guy who likes to learn and get his hands dirty, so in light of that i already decided im gonna paint it myself. ive never painted with a spray gun, i bought a cheap airbrush last year and dabbled with it a bit. i did a custom interior on my grand am, ive learned quit a bit on how to apply, how to fix runs etc. with some help my brother when he comes for holidays if im slacking. hes a 3rd year bodyman so any help is there. when i first picked the truck up, the first thing i noticed was the clearcoat was fading on that nasty purple. i can tell it was repainted because i found runs in the paint on the inside of the door where the door latch is. heres a shot of the clearcoat http://imageshack.us/a/img843/6462/i...0503193324.jpg so today ive started the stripping of the chrome trim, drivers side door. which at my surprise wasnt too ugly, one spot of rust not eating through in the front bottom of the door. heres the trim coming off and off http://imageshack.us/a/img41/1157/img20130503192503.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img208/3803/i...0503193037.jpg |
Good luck with the overhaul!
Painting can be very expensive... both the materials and tools you'll need. What colour are you going with? |
thanks, im gonna go with something similar to Newleaf Green... heres a sample
http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/.../Into_The_Wood im gonna be picking up materials as i go, i wont be starting the actual base coat till august, but im gonna have a couple months to patch up and get it ready |
ripped off some more trim, the box top rail trim and drivers box trim... little scary!

time was limited, about 10 minutes got me here:
http://imageshack.us/a/img96/2882/img20130511164520.jpg today i picked up: Bondo Glass Repair Kit Bondo Body Filler few sheets of sandpaper Primer Bondo Mesh Nitril Gloves Tach Cloth $50 total, but i used my canadian tire money so it all cost me $20 |
Ouch that looks pretty rotted.
You plan on cutting it out and welding in a patch panel right? |
i cut out the rust and used bondo mesh, i just have touchups to do now. pinholes and such in the filler. i dont have a welder or access to use one so i had to go the mesh way, otherwise i would have used a plate. but nonetheless its holding up pretty good. this weekend im gonna rip the other side trim off and see whats underneath. ill be doing the small rust on drivers side in the next 2 weeks. ill post up some updated pictures this weekend
|
so i didnt get it done on the weekend, but i did get another coat on that after sanding and using a flapper disc to get the high spots. im gonna sand some more during the week if i can and do another coat to finish it so that spot is done. heres a pic
http://imageshack.us/a/img89/3306/img20130521165558.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img692/8036/i...0521165607.jpg the fiberglass is very solid for that spot |
Looking good so far, did you make sure to get rid of all the rust?
I'd hate to see that rot out again in a year or two after all the work you're putting into it. Good luck! |
yeah i cut it all out for that spot, all the other spots on the drivers side was surface rust. ill be doing the rear of the box by the bumper next, im gonna brake and roll a small sheet at work for that one and weld it in
|
stripping the drivers side of the box today, gonna have to grab another flapper wheel later on

Puttin in a lot of work so far, can't wait to see the finished product.
|
thanks. next weekend is when ill start doing the passenger and tailgate. im gonna draw up some blueprints for the wheel wells seeing as how i have to remove the one whole side underneath the bodyline. brake a angle to look like a body kit sort-of coming down and tig it on. food for thought right now though, just focusing on getting it down to metal for now. saved $55 on a 35-piece angle grinder disc kit, last supply run i spent $25 and saved $30, so im only at $50 so far on supplies, i should be good until its time to paint. any metal pieces to weld in i get it for free at work.
heres what im gonna be painting it with http://www.duplicolor.com/products/psCandyCoat/ candy apple green is the pick |
well i took my grill off and gave it to my engineer at work, hes gonna blueprint a custom grill for me, then ill waterjet it at work as well. if it turns out and anyone likes it i would be glad to take some designs if you want them done. we can do anything you want except moulding. we have a cnc plasma, cnc waterjet and a cnc punch. ill post pics when its done in the next couple weeks
|
I'm not the type for really bright colours but I really like that green. I think this is gonna turn out reallll good.
|
im thinking im gonna throw a pearl in there. i looked into flakes but you have to be skilled and know what your doing. im gonna take the doors off, the hood and maybe the box and do those separately. im gonna be removing the rear bumper and making a roll pan, havent figured out a front bumper yet
|
dont have time this weekend, i picked up new pads and rotors i gotta change out tomorrow. during the week im gonna finish the tailgate and get it primed, hopefully by next weekend ill have all my new LEDs for my light swaps. everything is kinda running into each other as far as trying to stick to one thing at a time
|
a little update since its been a while. ive changed plans for whats going on. the box is almost done just one more hole to patch on the passenger side. i did a black base coat on the drivers side and tailgate, and ive begun to rockerguard it all. im gonna rockerguard the whole truck with green accents and clear coat on top of it all. once i got that black base coat on it looked pretty sharp. its been cloudy and rainy all week and supposed to be this week so next weekend im gonna finish the box and get started on the cab
|
wont be able to do anything this weekend, havent been able to do anything this week due to torrential rains. the system that is flooding southern alberta, the tailend hit us up a little further north
