4x4 won't shift properly

I have a 2000 Dak 4x4 with an automatic transmission. What is the proper way to shift from 2 wheel mode to 4X4.

I had thought you could just shift the front axle while you are driving and it should go into 4x4 high mode. That you could just leave your transmission in "drive" and shift your front axle into 4x4 high. I thought you would be OK doing this so long as your speed was less than say 50mph.

To go into 4X4 low, that you have to "stop" the vehicle shift the transmission into "nuetral" then shift the front axle to 4x4 low mode. Then go back into "drive" on your transmission.

Is all this corect??

Thanks in advance.

yea that is correct, but i think the shift speed is below 30 or 35 (not sure, but if the conditions are bad enough that i need the 4 wd then im not gonna be going any faster than that anyway)

I always switch while not moving, I think it is just easier on the process and hardware. I will check and see if I can switch at diff times and let you know.

I have another question on another thread titled 4x4 won't shift question#2. Any input would be apreaciated.

Thanks again

I heard with the electronic 4x4 you can switch it going 55 and under and a dealer salesman told me it was 35 and under with a transfer case shifter. But Im not positive he was correct.

well if you need 4x4 you COULD do it up to about 55 but if condidtions are bad then you probably shouldn't be going that fast
