Anyone ever change out piston rings on a 4.7: before?
 

Got my new piston and connecting rod today but it has new rings on it. WOuld like to use the old rings to keep everything in the engine equal. Has anyone ever removed rings and replaced rings before? It is calling for a special tool which doesn't look like an old school piston ring tool. I'm guessing it will be a fun little tool to try and track down too. No dealers around me even do engine work on the 4.7L so none of them have the tools.

i must have missed something, but why are you replacing a piston-con rod in 1 cylinder?

that is just a fancy tool that does the same damn thing BTW.

Because the connecting rod had a chunk of metal missing at the bearing cap joint. Was like that when I got the engine, didn't know until I opened it up. The connecting rods cannot be serviced in this engine, at least not per any dealer recommendation, since they are pressed. So I had to buy the whole assembly to do it right.

UPdate, got the new ones off and the old ones on with no problems. All ready to go now. :)

were you able to swap over the rod bearings too? i hope so because new bearings on a unmachined crank could be problems...
