wont go into gear

my truck wont go into any gear except 5th the shifter wont move into place to be in gear what could be wrong with it? is this a common problem?

ZAKMAN 03-31-2010 09:05 PM

its a 5 speed manual fyi

Check a couple things.
Is your clutch good? Is the fluid full?
Check the linkage underneath at the transmission. Make sure nothing broke, or anything.
My thought is the clutch is having an issue, but it could be the linkage.
If nothing is wrong there, then I have no idea.

shift fork? Not familiar with standard repairs...

ZAKMAN 04-01-2010 09:46 AM

i checked the linkage and all looks good ill check the fluid today and idt the clutch is bad cause it will go in 5th and wont roll

Is it grinding when you try to put it in gear, or is just like kind of not going in, like if you kept on pushing the shifter it would break the handle before it went into gear?

TheePlaymaker 04-01-2010 12:15 PM

by checking the linkage you mean taking the boot off and unbolting it from the trans correct? there really isn't any linkage you can see from underneith if i'm not mistaken

Billiam 04-01-2010 07:05 PM

Make a nasty metal on metal sound lately? When my throw out bearing was going bad I got that nasty noise and it was tough to get in to gear... seeing how my bearing was in 5 pieces.

ZAKMAN 04-02-2010 12:26 PM

i got a buddy to help me and we tore the trans apart cause the clutch was fine and the linkage on top looked fine and when we got the case off there were 4 ball bearings and a couple chunks of metal so its the tranny im just going to have to get a new one

CSCustomCars 04-02-2010 06:35 PM

By linkage, yes I meant the one under the shift boot. It's a RWD tranny so there is no other shift linkage other than the shifter directly to the transmission.

It is rare to have something break in the linkage but I have seen it happen.

Glad you figured out the problem. Lost a major bearing there buddy.

ZAKMAN 04-02-2010 09:34 PM

i dont know if the ball bearings actually came from a bearing cause theyre pretty big and theres no bearing thats broken just some sheared gears but all i know is is that i need a new tranny but i wouldnt have been able to figure it out if it wasnt for my buddy me and him dropped the tranny in about an hour and a half (unorganized tools are a pain) but he got that trans completely stripped down found the problem and put it all back together in about 2 hours and hes 17 i gotta give him credit
