2002 Dakota Cat Replacement

Good evening guys!

Just a quick hi for I ask away... Hi! I'm Kyle and I'm 18 from Ontario, Canada.

Anyway,

My grandfather has a 2002 Dakota Sport (reg cab) with less than 40,000kms (25,000 miles) and his catalytic converter went on him (hole in it) and he needs a new one. The piece of exhaust piping behind the cat also will probably have to be replaced.

Here's the kicker: the dealership where he got it from wants to charge him... $2000!!!! Isn't that freakin insane? I'm guessing that they are trying to rip him off cause of his age.

From my experience, Cats are only about $50-$150 and the labour is roughly $100-$200, I told him I'd take it to a shop where I live for him because that price is just insane.

Do Dakota's have some insanely high-priced cats on them or is this dealership (pardon my french) ****in insane? After he fixes it he's looking to get a new truck anyway which is where I come in, I'm lookin to buy it.

So... Has anyone ever needed their cat replaced and if so how much did it cost you (roughly)?

Cheers guys!

It depends what cat you go with if you go with a aftermarket name brand you will pay 80-150.00 for one but you can go with a cheaper one for about 50-80.00 from a autoparts store.

Just called a dealership and he said it depends on if there is a Y pipe going down to the cat. He said the part could cost around $500.

What Y pipe is he talking about? I'm a pontiac boy myself but I may be getting my grandfather's dakota.

Cheers guys

if its only a bad cat, the last one under the passanger side cab. you wont need to worry about the ypipe. which is basically the place where the 2 manifolds pipe meet. 500 for a cat or even a y pipe is so over priced. go to some non dealer and have them replace the cat for like 100 bucks.
