Default Rear Diff Question

I was looking through kijiji today for stuff for my truck and seen a posi rear end for my year truck in a 4x4. Would i be able to replace my truck, a 2000 RWD Dak with the posi rear end? I'm tired of the one wheel peel lol.

Do a search on this topic, lots of threads on this already.

With that being said, there is no Dakota rear diff with a "posi". It was either a locker or a LSD. Yes you can put in a locker or LSD unit but it depends what your needs are. If all you want it for is to say you can do good burnouts, it's not worth it. If you plan to offroad the truck a lot, then a locker is a good option. Lockers can be a little rough on the street though depending on the locker you instal. Instal costs are high too since they are time consuming to put in. They make simplier "lunch box" lockers that are easier to instal and I've read a lot of mixed reviews on them. Limited slip will gain you more traction but it can slip like the name says and you won't always be guaranteed both wheels to grip.

LSD came as an option in Dakotas and Durangos so you may be able to find an axle out of one of those and swap it in. Probably the easiest and cheapest solution and since your 2wd the gear ratio doesn't really matter.

This is kind of a broad overview. I'm by no means an expert on rear differentials but have done some reading. There's some other guys on here that can give you a lot more insight.

But to answer your question straight forward; yes you can it just depends on what you want.

This one?

Would need to get some coil spacers for the front, since its for a 4x4 truck with the springs over the axles instead of under. You would have a MASSIVE rake if you didn't level out the front.

This one?

Literally, you can just drop it in.

The first one the shackles could just be flipped and it would work fine.

The first one was the one I was looking at. So I could get that, flip it over and it should install with no issues?

You'll probably have to modify the perches on the first one, but that shouldn't really be a big deal. There may be a few other small things that need modification, but it should be pretty straight forward.

Yeah you might need to do some minor modifications to make it work perfect but it should be pretty easy and straight forward.

Well I was playing in the snow yesterday with my Dak and made a discovery. Seems there is already an LSD in place in my truck! I think I'll just leave it at that for the minute.

To verfiy for sure, jack up the whole rearend and put the tranny in neutral. Turn one rear tire with you hand and if the other side spins the same direction you have an LSD(or locker if equipped). If it spins the opposite way then you have an open differential or a extremely worn LSD
