conventional vs synthetic
I just rebuilt motor and I'm approaching the first 1k on it so I'm going to change the oil. My question is: what is better, conventional or synthetic? I put conventional in it for the first start up, but I have been wondering if synthetic would be better since it is essentially a new motor. What do you guys think? Is there any benefit from switching?

Everything I've read about standard motors says its good to break engines in with conventional and then switch to synthetic. I'm sure others will chime in as well.

yes, break it in on dino oil, then switch. benefits include gas mileage, less friction and wear, quicker oil pressure on startup...etc

valvoline premium blue diesel 15w 40. zddp, works good in my 2001 3.9 v-6

Thanks guys. Is there a brand of synthetic that is better than the rest or are they pretty much all the same?

Personally for a Dakota, I don't think synthetic is necessary.

I have used synthetic oil in my Dakota since I bought it new. No real loyalty to a specific brand. I have used Amsoil to SuperTech with no problems. I have used synthetic in all my vehicles for years without problems, I would go with synthetic. I have used about every viscosity from 0W-20 in 4 cyl to 5W-50 in V8's depending on the seasons. Have used multiple brands of filters from Mobil 1 to SuperTech, no issues there either. I change my oil from 3-5000 miles. Good luck with your choices.

Thanks for all the info guys. I've decided to go with Valvoline Full Syn 10W-30 w/ a K&N filter.
