Road noise or vibration, goes away on right hand ramps
I have a noise that sounds like it is coming from the front of the truck and I cannot figure out where to start looking for it. It is a low frequency wah-wah type noise that gets loud enough to hear really bad between 40-65 mpg, but completely goes away when I am turning the wheel to the right on a right hand ramp. Noise stays going to the left. This makes me think it isn't the driveshaft or propeller shaft.
New tires today and alignment is correct. Not sure what would cause it but make it also go away on a right turn, possibly my front differential? |
if its a 4x4 sounds like axle u joints
It had crossed my mind, but yeah you are right, it could very well be my left front CV joint. Never heard one that was bad to judge what it would sound like, but it makes sense. For $53 it probably isn't a bad idea to change it.
It is 4WD, no u joint though, just the CV joint. But could be it. |
wheel bearings? i'm sure whoever did the tires would have noticed but maybe not...my right side moved a quarter inch, in and out with my hands at 12 and 6, with the wheel up off the ground. i never heard them because my tires are so noisy and I thought it was that but I know the test is turn left or right and see if the noise goes away.

I am in for wheel bearings as well, especially if it quiets when you turn. If it sounds like the right, its the left... or vice-versa.
Thanks. I'm going to napa tonight. I'll report back. I am going to change out the left front wheel bearing.
Id agree with wheel hub assemblies (bearings)
Same here, wheel bearing/hub.
before changing the wheel bearing, just jack it up and spin it slowly. If its bad enough, you'll feel it.
COuldn't feel it with the tire on or off, but once I got the bearing out I could definitely tell and feel the grinding going on inside of it. Put it all back together and the truck feels like its riding on glass, super smooth and quiet.
