Default terrible gas mileage .. How to improve it

Well I've been recording my gas mileage the last few fillups and the way I was calculating my mileage is the number of miles driver divided by the number of gallons to fill up. So just recently I drove 248miles divided by 19.2gallons. so 248/19.2 i got 12.9. So I'm get 12.9 miles per gallon with a 2wd v6 dakota WTF! I recently took my k&n cold air intake off and I wasnt calculating the miles before so I couldnt tell if there is a difference but I took it off because the tube cracked at the bottom. K&n is replacing it because there was a recall on it and the mopar ones because of defective plastic. I will see if it goes up once I get it back on. My question is what all should I look at to change or check to improve my gas mileage? I guess spark plugs, rotor, wires, what else? My truck does have 232k on it also and the po I dont think took the best care of it. The wires look new as do the plugs but I havnt taken the spark plugs out and checked . Any advice would be awesome. I read on another post about the map sensor??? thanks again

Even tho its a v6 doesnt mean its gonna get good mpg. I would try a full tune up(plugs, wires, rotor, cap) check your brakes to see if they are dragging at all, tire pressure. My dakota was only getting 13mpg average thats why I switched to diesel.

Default New Chrysler Pentastar

I wonder if you could put a new Chrysler Pentastar V6 in a Dakota probably need custom engine mounts and everything but with 283 and 305 horsepower thats some V6.

Just find a totaled new car with one.

Is that highway mpg or city mpg? If it's highway, I'd say you have a problem. I've had my V6 2WD Dakota down to 11.9 mpg in the winter time. A V6 and a heavy truck don't mix very well, but I also have 31's and 3.55 rear gears, so I wasn't really shocked by the low mpg. I'd say do a basic tune up like others have said, but like Ramguy said, just because it's a V6 doesn't mean it's going to get good mpg. It's still a truck no matter how you cut it.

Lightbulb Wouldn’t this be a great Idea?

Wouldn’t this be a great Idea if a company started selling the Chrysler Pentastar V6 as a special upgrade kit for any auto that it could fit into with custom new engine mounts and everything you would need it would be like getting a new car in one swoop plus the improved gas mileage that would be great.

Drive into a special shop boom in one day a new power train drive off a happy owner.

Of course Chrysler would not be happy they couldn’t sell as many new autos doing that could they. You know they well maybe not them but some company experimented with just such a possibility as a totally simple exchangeable car concept as a changeable powertrain and even changing the body to a new style when you wanted.

Doing such a great thing would change the auto industry to mean the consumer was in power of their choices not them so they would never do it plus more companies could compete for all the interchangeable parts they would not have a monopoly like they do now.

I would think the price of autos would drop ASAP no pushy sales man or two packages to choose from any more wow the customer has a choice?

I'm not sure if the v6 is the same, but i took off my mechanical fan (it still has an electrical fan) and gained a few mpg

buy a '92 civic, they get like 42 on the highway... I'm only kiding.

I would certainly start with the cap, rotor, and wires and see what that does. It's a cheap tune up and that's always the best place to start before you go throwing 02 sensors and cats at it.
