04 Dakota Rear Axle help
 

My rear axle is leaking at the diff cover and would like to ask if anyone knows what the axle is? I think its a 9.25 chrysler axle and just want to make sure.
It just leaking from the diff cover and I want to replace the diff cover as mine is bent because I backed up into a tree stump.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also what weight oil do I put back into the axle?
I know is 75-90 or 75-140 but just want to make sure.
I also would like to try the Royal purple stuff. Has anyone used this and is it good to use.
I have heard a lot of good reviews on it.

Also when I change the cover should I use a solvent to clean the inside of the axle?
I have really never had to mess with one and any help will be greatly appreciated.

I know I probably should just put the factory cover on right as I do not do any rock crawling with my truck just some off Roading.
Sorry for all of the replys already I am just worried because axles cost alot and I want to fix the leak as soon as possible before any water gets in there or anything.
I check the level every three days and had to add 1 quart already when I first saw the leak.
what would you suggest on what cover to get? The g2 has a more fluid capacity too with a oil dipstick. I think the g2 does not come with a gasket too just rubber silicone to seal it.

If you have a 12 bolt cover it's a 9 1/4" axle. If it has 10 bolts it's an 8 1/4".

75w90 should be fine. I haven't used Royal Purple as I use Mobil One. If you have an LSD don't forget the limited slip additive - put it in even IF the oil says it has it. Get it from a dealer. Then make sure to do some figure 8's after the change to work it in.

My factory manual says to use 75-140 if I do hauling. dont know if that really matters though. I have been putting in royal purple 75-140 so I might want to stick with that right?
where online can I get the limited slip additive the only ones here at the part store is
tranx x limited slip addative.
I want to make sure I do it right with the right fluids.

4318060AB is a good number. Early models use 5 oz.

There were some changes in the later years. Going to 75w-140 was one of the changes but check the owners manual.

As to flushing it out, you could just wipe it as best you can. If it is NOT an LSD then it should be clean. The LSD does make a bit of a mess but you don't want to use anything that could damage the clutches. Just use some clean oil to flush it out.

How can I tell if it is a lsd differential?
I think it is but am unsure. I think I am going with the mag-hytec diff cover which holds 5 quarts. Would I have to add more limited slip additive. hytec says 4oz for 3quarts.
If I get 2 4oz bottles can I just add both of them? Is too much lsd additive bad?

To flush it out I dumped the cheapest oil in it first ran it one month then dumped it. That worked great and pulled a good amount of crud out of hiding I was surprised how well it worked.
