Chipped keys

Is it possible to program your own chipped key? I have only one from hte prev owner and not very comfy with that.
I read there are some cars you can do it with.

But other searches came up with a resounding NO YOU CAN'T

Some locksmiths claim they can do it.. Never tried it tho so couldnt tell you plus every place is different.. Call the dealer and ask them what they charge to do it sometimes its cheap and other times its crazy.

My local hardware store (Ace) does it.

Key

Apparently the guy's method is to remove the chip and stick it near the key cylinder on the column. Sounds interesting. Maybe just stick the whole key to the column.

Depends on how worried you are about your truck being stolen.

Even if you do stick the transponder somewhere, it will still eventually die.

The general dealer charge is usually .5 labor time to program no matter how many keys. Don't buy the dealer keys...too much $$ for just a SKIM key.

Keys

Ok. So I get the keys on ebay and get the code from dealer,go to locksmith and he plugs in his gizmo and there is no sign of life from the Obd port. That sounds odd, maybe someone disabled it?

Check your fuses.

Got the key

Had PEP boys check my OBD codes (none) just to verify the port was working and finally got the key made, the locksmith's 1st gizmo wouldn't work so he pulls out a second one and that one doesn't work in my truck either, he gets a third, but can't find the power cord for it! He goes back in the shop and brings out a 4th device that he guarantees will work and it did. He said it uses tokens or something, Final cost was 40.00 for locksmith and two keys on ebay for 17 bucks.
