Front transfer case noise /clunking

Front transfer case noise /clunking
I've got a 99 Dodge Dakota Sport and I just recently purchased it and when starting the truck up putting out of park to reverse or drive it jerks and is hard to put in gear but going down the road no other noises and transmission smooth fine at right RPM. Also no play in my U-joints. What do you think is wrong with my transfer case?
