Dodge Dakota 2001 45RFE No shifting after pan drop.
 

Okay so I was having some issues with it slipping when shifting. It would always do it on 2 gears but the exact ones would change between tests. So for example it would be 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 and so on. The truck had a large amount of miles so I made the call to check the pan and find out if I was looking at major damage. Luckily the fluid was old and pretty viscous but not full of metal shavings. The magnet as well was not showing anything more than old oil. So I replaced the filters and gasket and filled it back up. Now after starting the engine I can move the shifter but it doesn't actually change gears. Its stuck in park atm and refuses to budge. After trying to shift for a few minutes I got p1732 p0781 p1784 to pop up. I did some digging and found that it might be a lost prime. I did forget to fill the cylinder filter so I bought more fluid and redid the job. This time filling the filter to the top and re-seating it before continuing. Unfortunately its still giving the same codes with no different behavior. Is there anything else I should look at? The sensor behind a heat shied as well as a connecter on the back side of the transmission are pretty badly coated in fluid and gunk. Could they be a source of concern? Thanks in advance for any help.

Sometimes, getting the filters to seal properly is a right pain in the keester, and a bad seal there would certainly explain your symptoms.

Check screen filter to make sure washer didn't double up. Sometimes the old o-ring gets stuck and doubles up with new. Instead of pumping fluid it then sucks air.

By the screen filter do you mean the flat one? Should I prime the flat one too?

Yes, flat filter. O-ring is on neck. You can't prime it, it's not a vessel...it's a screen, which sits submerged. The pump should prime things anyway but be aware that aftermarket spin on filters do not have anti-drainback valves, so they may drain the lines upon shut down.

Okay I didn't think that one could be. I'm hoping that is the case. I'll report back after I do the repair if it works.

So I realized that I still had the old filter in a box. I checked it out and sure enough the O ring is not even on it. I think Your probably 100% right Dodgevity. I probably left it stuck inside.

So still nothing. Is there anything besides the filters that could cause this? A sensor or pump perhaps?
