Oil fill cap condensation

I have a 2000 Dakota 4x4, 4.7, 207K. Every winter the oil fill cap collects that milky crap. I've searched the threads and havent had any luck. User error most likely. Will a pcv valve change fix that. mine does rattle. or is that just what the 4.7s do.i had a 2002 ram with a 4.7 that did the same thing. I bought that one new and sold it at 134k.

Don't worry about it. It's caused by condensation under the cap. This is due to the design of the oil filler housing, which is shaped like a tall black funnel. The distance from the engine means it stays cooler up by the cap, so the water formed by condensation mixes with the oil vapors and forms the crud. Winter makes the problem worse. This has no bearing on the oil that's down in the engine... as long as you drive it to operating temp, it evaporates there. I do suggest that one shouldn't use a lower temp thermostat with the 4.7L, especially if running conventional oil.

I would agree its normal. get out on the highway once in a while to get everything hot to evaporate it off.

I do short trips to work and when I went to change the oil when it was -20*c and I had not warmed the engine up...the oil would not drain as the water froze and blocked the drain plug hole. approx. 2oz of water came out after I warmed it up. The truck runs great...no oil consumption... it has 250000 kilometers. I change the oil before winter and every 6000km.

if you had a pcv problem; the air filter would be oil filled.

I put a shop paper towel under the cap and change it every couple weeks. It really helps. Since there is that insert in there no worries about it going down the tube.

Have the same thing here for the past 18 winters. Dodge did come up with a "fix" at one point, all it does is hide the goop.

Wouldn't worry about it.

Normal. Had it every winter since new
