OD question
 

Never paid much attention to over-drive impact on RPMs before. But, during a long, boring trip back from Alabama today, I took some readings. Seems like the OD on my Dak drops RPMs approx 900-1,000. If I'm taching 3,000 with OD off and hit the button, rpms drop to 2,000-2,100. I always knew it was like a big shift from 3rd to 5th but not 1,000 rpms. Is that pretty much standard for Dakota's?

A few trips ago, I did the same thing (pressed the OD off button) and my RPMs changed about that same amount. It's pretty nice to have 4-speeds (or 5 speeds on some of the newer ones).

I showed my wife so she would see what it would feel like while towing her car out west. It was not too bad I expected a much harsher drive w/o OD. But yeah I was running close to 3k at 65 and went down to 1800 when I turn OD back on.

Same here. Going about 70 im at around 2.5k rpm turn od off and it jumps up to about 3.2-3.5 so ya ita a 1k jump. The truck really drags to when i push it. I guess just cuz of the longer gears, but meh doesnt matter to me. I useally turn my od off when im racing for a higher rpm anyways.

Thanks for the feedback. That's a bunch of rpm. Both my Jeeps only drop something around 500-600. Guess Dodge is trying to squeeze some more mpg with the big drop in rpm. Problem is, when I'm towing any kind of load at highway speeds the choice is either 3,500 or 2,500. Oh well, at least I haven't had any tranny problems (knock on wood) like so many Dak drivers had, so guess I need to be thankful for what I got! Thanks again for the benchmarking, guys.
