Depends what your using it for; any off roading? driving to a mall? carrying tools? use it to drive in the snow? I like 1999+ Jeep Grand cherokees. 4.7 gets better mileage in the jeep than the durango does (not by very much though) and stock it can go offroading in more places than just about any other suv. I dont know though, its a hard choice. When i first sold my car I had to make the choice between the durango/grand cherokee/dakota. I didnt choose the durango because it was a heavy suv and everyone that I found for sale (with around 90k miles) had a big list of **** wrong with them. I would have chosen the jeep but I needed a truck for work and its nice to be able to throw crap in the bed without getting the interior messy/dirty. Anyway, theres lots and lots of choices out there for you. Even though my only 2 vehicles were both mopar, nissan pathfinders and the early 2000 toyota 4runners are nice. All depends on what you're using it for.

Gas mileage isn't really an issue. I have a car for that. This will be a weekend wheeler and an every other day driver. I do plan on getting larger tires and a 3 or so inch lift kit.

I don't like the way the Grand Cherokees look, I like the older body styles.

i agree about the older cherokee styles, i used to have an 87 with 4.5" of lift and the 4.0 I6. great car. now my friend has a 98 JGC and its pretty badass because it has the 5.9 in it.

I'm more of a usability than power kind of guy. I do like the 5.9 though, although I wish the 5.7 HEMI came around when the 5.9 did. (it would be cheap now)

I personally don't care for Cherokees at all, I've got a few friends with them.

If you want to go wheeling my personal choice would be a 91-94 Explorer. Stronger axles than a Cherokee, more low end torque, fixed output yoke/no need for a slip yoke eliminator, manual hubs, a real frame, ect. JMO.

Exploders suck.

Hum... SUV's...

Honda Pilot - Kid Carrier
Honda Passport - Good Off-roader
Nissan Pathfinder - Weekend Off-roader/Daily Driver
Toyota Rav4 - Really tiny...
Toyota 4Runner - Great Off-roader
Chevy Tahoe - MPG's not so great - With a lift works pretty good off-road
Chevy K5 Blazer - Need I say more?
Chevy S10 Blazer - I own one of these, Not a bad daily driver at all
Chevy Trailblazer - Good Daily Driver Really Comfortable, Not so much off-road
All GMC's Equivalent's to Chevy's Mentioned
Always the Jeep Wrangler - No explanation needed

Why? The 31 spline 8.8 is extremely stout, the 4.0 V6 has more low end torque than a Cherokee 4.0 I6. It has a real frame. The TTB is stout. It's got fixed t-case yokes. They're easier to work on.

The only thing that sucks is the automatic transmissions, but so do most automatic transmissions.
