Default Stock Muffler

I had a hanger break on the tailpipe so I took the truck to the local exhaust shop. They replaced all the pipe and muffler from the CAT back and it is louder than when the tailpipe came off. I am not at all happy with the sound. Are the replacements for the stock muffler louder than the stock or is there something I am missing?

Some things to consider include the size of the muffler, it's construction, and the size of the pipe.

Not all mufflers are the same.

Well I know he said the pipe was the same size but when I questioned him about the noise he said "It shouldn't be any louder." Almost as if I didn't know it what I was talking about. I drive the truck everyday. I think I should know. lol. Sounds almost as if the new muffler is hollowed out. Only way to explain it.

Question your muffler

The louder noise is the muffler they put on your truck all muffler shops believe all customers want a performance muffler probably because they cost more so the shop makes more money on one.

You need to be very specific on how noisy a muffler you want or a shop will slap on what they want.

If warranted take it back and get a quieter one

Actually, it's probably a much cheaper muffler, not necessarily in cost but in construction. Probably more "generic" in application too.

Baffle design plays a role.

Unfortunately, it's really not something you can tell by appearances. Live with it or replace with an OEM.

Lightbulb not OEM they are tanks and $$$$

Just research mufflers on their web sites and forums like this one as to how loud they are buy stainless steal if you can afford them they last forever cheap is not the way to go with mufflers.

Manufactures list the sound and how loud they are for each model a little research goes a long way.
