Had a Mazda 626 that had the same issue. My issue turned out to be something in the digital instrument cluster. I could hear something in the instrument cluster make a clicking sound just before the alt light came on. replaced the digital instrument cluster with a junk yard analog instrument cluster, replaced alt again (was still under warranty from the rebuild shop) and all was good.
