info on 1998 Dakota
I have found this truck and need info please. It has a 2.5 motor and need to know about that motor and trans etc? I know that is a Jeep motor and he said the lifter(s) making a noise. I have a 01 Durango and the lower part of that motor was and was told to use Marvel Mystery Oil and that would stop it did. Would something like that work or should i stay away from it. Has 145,000 or so miles extra cab and missing the rear bumper in pics. Body and paint looks nice and good tires for $1900.00 thanks

My grandfather was a life long mechanic and a MMO nut and always preached how good the stuff was. I use it when engines get water in them (that haven't hydrolocked) as it seems to make water basically stick to it and carry it out when draining.
Back in my day, the normal MO was to go to a thicker oil, although these newer engines are so viscosity specific you can't get away with that anymore. I had an older GM 350 would burn oil, suffer from minor blow by, weep from old gaskets and tap. Going from the recommended 10/40 to 20/50 significantly helped all four small problems.
Now I tend to use Lucas HD oil stabilizer to quiet tappets in older engines. Substitute one quart for a quart of oil at change time.
If I'm not mistaken, they should be 6 on 4.5" standard or 6x114.3 metric...

A word of caution the 2.5 is a bit on the weak side with that mileage I'm sure its lost some power. I like my 2.5 but it works for me as I'm a city driver and my Dakota is the lightest model they made basic cab and bed anything heaver like an extra cab will be heaver and make the 2.5 feel like it has no power at all.
Now if you pull the head get a valve job and replace the lifters it may liven it up some pulling the head is very easy on a 2.5 check the compression first.

Shame the OP didn't find him a Dak with a VMI 2.5 in it - now that would be cool!!!

VM Motori, is an Italian small diesel engine manufacturer. Made a very good name for themselves in the marine industry. Was co-owned by GM and a joint venture had them used in some Chrysler and GM products - Dakota, Jeep Liberty, Chevy Colorado, etc.
All ties with GM and VMI were cut by Daimler/Mercedes when they aquire Chrysler, making diesel Daks very rare as most were exported to South America.
Low and behold, GMs financial woes led the company to be purchased by Fiat Chrysler and now a VM Motori 3.0 V6 powers the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 Eco diesel...
