Default Dakota noise on 2wd

My 2004 Dakota, 4,7 l, 4x4 makes a grinding noise on 2x4, it stops when i shift it on 4x4 but 4x4 does not work (i hear a shifting noise from under the truck when i go from 2 to 4wd)
any ideas ?

What transfer case do you have?

I have no idea, got this truck this summer and i never worked on it yet, different models available ?

Electronic shift?

You can crawl under the truck, and on the back side of the t-case, there is a round aluminum tag screwed to the back. It'll tell ya what t-case it is.

The tag is real dirty but this is punched on the transférer case ; C16117BE , 00104.
Does that help ?

Should have an NV### on there somewhere, probably followed by "D", or something similar.
