Default 04 HEMI Gauge problems

i have a 04 HEMI Durango that i bought last year with 70K and for the 1st 6 months no problems then i started getting bad readings on my fuel gauge and a check eng code would pop up. then after a while the gauge just quit working. so i was told that the level sensor was prolly the problem and it needed replaced and that required a whole fuel pump assembly . so today i put in a new pump assembly and the gauge started working again. so we take it for a test run and everything is working then the DTE started going down fast and so we added gas and brought the tank up to 1/2 full we get home about 1.2 miles and shut off the car then start it again to see where the gauge is at and now it says 1/4 tank . im at a loss because this is the same thing it did before just quitting before.

if anyone could help i need it

Hi Matt:
What engine is in your D? Thanks for listing the miles. So many folks post and do not list the 3 most important fact.
Model year, engine, and miles.

What P code was associated with the CE light when it came on? Did you do the key dance and read it?

I would call your local dealer and provide them your VIN # to make sure all applicable recall work has been done.
You can also do the same thing at the Chrysler/Dodge web site if you wish.

Can you tell me if you found any cracks in/around the top of the fuel pump housing?
I have been battling a P0456 CE light that I believe will be cured by replacing the FP assembly. It appears that the 04 Durangos got poorly made FP housings to go along with the trouble prone Hemi engines for the 04 model year.

Matt:
What is the build date on the driver's door label? Be aware that a number of the 04 Hemi engines had valve spring issues as well as a crankshaft clearance issues that can quickly destroy it.

The build date on my D is Jan of 2004, and the original engine died at 39K due to a collapsed valve spring on cylinder #3.

It is possible that your engine may have already been replaced, was made later on with the better parts, or has yet to expose its flaw.

The check eng light is off now but I'm still getting inaccurate fuel readings . The code I get p 0463. Also the fuel pump that I took out was not the oem pump it was a Airtex that looked fairly new .

The build date says 02-04 Name: 20130609_180118_zps44728499.jpg

Matt:
Thanks for the update. It appears that P0463 indicates that the fuel level circuit voltage is too high.
Google the P0463 and see what experiences others have had. Possibly the float is stuck.
Look here as an example:
http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=DTC_P0463

I imagine that your FP was replaced due the cracks in the housing I expect to find in mine when I remove it.
Having to replace a FP at before 100K especially due to housing cracks is indicative of poor quality parts IMO!

The problem is the float or the fuel level sensor wiring. When Monitored:
TEST No.1: With the ignition on, the fuel level is compared to the previous key down after a 20 second delay. TEST No.2: The PCM monitors the fuel level at ignition on.

Set Condition:
TEST No.1: If the PCM does not see a difference in fuel level of greater than 0.1 volt the test will fail. TEST No.2: If the PCM does not see a change in the fuel level of .1765 over a set amount of miles the test will fail. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

Matt:
Do you have any update on the issue here? It sounds like your oem pump must have either died an early death, or suffered housing cracks due to a rusted locking ring like mine did. So far, it looks like this caused the annoying recurrent p0456 code I was having.
