Clogged radiator, clogged coolant passages, air in the system, cooling fans not operating. To name a few.

Bubbling antifreeze in the resovoir

I just had this same issue. Thought maybe blown head gasket. Had the thermostat replaced as a starter. Worked fine for a few days then started up again. Was at brother in laws house when it happened again. He took a look at it, went into garage and came out with a radiator cap pressure tester. Turns out the radiator cap was bad. Bought new radiator cap and nothing more so far.
