question on old "fogged' headlights.. a little O/T
a little off-topic...maybe this is a question for 1st Gen...
Saw this on e-bay, they do show an old Neon in the auction...just wondering if there is something equivelant, like home made, or something similar that I could use on my wifee's 96 Caravan headlights...tthey seem to have this problem... thought it was just dirt or some kind of polish that yellowed, but looking close, looks like tiny cracks or scratches ..or is it just best to buy this off e-bay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HEADL...QQcmdZViewItem |
RE: question on old "fogged' headlights.. a little O/T
your best bet is to take the headlight apart with the bake method and to get a really good car wax (which removes oxydisation) and just buff the crap out of it. did it to my kia and they came out brand new looking

ORIGINAL: Biged83 your best bet is to take the headlight apart with the bake method ..... Is that all that is in the auction is either some kind of wax or polishing agent? Is there something I can just pick up at the auto parts store that will do the same thing? |
RE: question on old "fogged' headlights.. a little O/T
yeah any autoparts store should have some. i used meguires wax to do mine.
the bake method is when you put the headlight in the oven at a low temp and pry it apart. |

wow, long time ago. I had same problem and this is how i fixed it for all the other neon owners out there.
1. Go to Walmart and get 2000 grit automotive sand paperand some kind of plastic polish (i used mothers) 2. spraw headlights with water then start sanding( this is watsanding) 3. White residue will come off dont worry it will come off with a sponge 4. May have to repeat several times, dont worry if headlights still look hazed after about 3 times of wetsanding. 5. Apply the plasic polish,Note you will have to reapply this evrytime you wash the car. |

-My ol' Tempo does this too. All I do is use a bit of elbow grease along with a wet rag and some polishing compound. After getting them nice and clear, I go over them with a bit of Meguier's cleaner wax. They stay nice and clear for around 4-6 months before touching them up again. Before I did this, my headlights were extremely cloudy looking. Here's a pic of them a couple months after doing the cleaning routine. Not too bad, but keep in mind they were cleaned a couple months before this was taken.

my brother works at a dealership in the autobody dept and he suggested the wetsanding method also.

-I've also read about the wet sanding method, but following that up with shooting clearcoat w/UV block.
