help with engine code P1685 invalid skim

I need some help. I've been looking all over the internet and can't find anything. A friend of mine has a neon and he just got a 'Skim Invalid Key' code 'p1685'. This is on a 2001 base. Now the car wont start. All I need to know is how to clear the code and get the car to start so he can take it to the dealer. As always any and all help is very much apreciated.

RE: help with engine code P1685 invalid skim

DTC P1685 is Invalid SKIM Key. The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) is part of the security system and kills the vehicle when a wrong key is used. There may be a problem with your key or the chip reader in the ignition switch. This is something the dealer will need to determine for sure. This code will also be set if someone actually tried to steal the vehicle.

My guesswould beto reset your PCM (unhook bat. and depress brake for 1 min), then try to start the car. If that doesn't work, I guess haul it into a dealership so they can run a diagnostic

Thanks. that's what he's worried about, takin itto the dealer. He said he was using a spare key so maybe that's it. Well he's gonna try to reset the computer and if that don't work, $$$$. Thanks again

P1685 code

I am getting the same code (P1685) on my 1998 Dodge Intrepid. The car won't start unless I jump it. If I jump it it starts easily. Will changing the ignition switch cure my problem?

I have got the same code from using the wrong key in my 02 sxt neon. but my neon still starts up and runs fine. The only thing that the chip in the key actually dose is dosent let the fuel into the motor for the car to run when you start it. it should run for a second then stop.

And changing your ignition wont do a thing for you because the dealler still has to reprogram it to your computer.

Most likely your key isnt functioning properly
