Low idle when stopped in drive

04 Neon, 102K.

When stopped at a red light in drive, I can feel the rpm drop. It's hasn't died anytime yet. I can't tell the rpm since mine has no tach. I shift to neutral and I can feel the rpm go up.

I have cleaned the TB, IAC, MAF, changed air filter and seafoamed. I am going to change plugs tomorrow.

Any other pointers?

There was some talk about some adjustment in the throttle body, what is that?

An auto ALWAYS idles lower in gear. Problem solved.

Your car is operating normally.

Well the idle seems to drop pretty low and I feel greater vibrations on the steering as though the motor is stumbling.
I'll borrow an OBD2 gauge one of these days and see what the rpm drops to.

Did the new plugs and wires help?

gcretro 02-15-2011 04:24 PM

Nope just plugs I didn't change wires..., I put new NGK V-powers. (There were cheap about 7 bucks after discount at advance auto online order. Wires might be more I guessed.)

No noticeable difference.

What's that throttle body adjustment screw some folks have talked about? Just curious.

How old are the wires? They should be replaced about every 60,000 miles (every other plug change).

Most auto's don't have that screw, but it allows you to adjust your idle.

I've changed the wires at every tune up .. when the plugs change the wires get changed also. But that's just me, I've done this to every car I've owned. I guess you could say it's a personal preference. I'm a bit off like this ...

My auto only does that when she needs new plugs and wires so change the wires and your problem should be fixed.

-Mine idles about 550 rpm when sitting at a stop light while in drive. If I put it in neutral, it will go up to around 700 rpm. Never had any issues with it dying or sputtering, just a smooth idle at stops. Right now I have NGK G-Power plugs in it.
