Lowering a 4WD
 

Hey all,
Yeah I know, out of the ordinary, but then again, that's usually who I am.
Want to do a 2-4 drop on the truck, it's a 2001 1500 4WD. I don't do off-roading with it, I don't need all the clearance. Who's done it, or who knows how to do it? All the parts and stuff I find are for 2WD trucks. So any and all help would be appreciated.

Probably aren't going to find any aftermarket parts for the front, but, any kit that will work on a 2by, should work on yours as well for the rear.

For the front, you could have custom springs made..... or, heat your current ones till you get the drop you want, or, simply cut out a coil or three. Watch that you don't stuff parts into places they shouldn't be though.....

If you really want a lowered pick up, don't ruin a perfectly good 4x4 that someone could use. Sell it, and buy a 2001 2wd Ram and lower it. ;)

yeah because there's a big shortage of used 4x4 trucks :icon_rolleyes:. 4x4 is still useful on a lowered truck for wintertime.

take out the rear block,, that a free 3in's

take a coil off the front coils will give you about 2 inch drop in the front then put new shocks on then take the rear blocks out put new u bolts on and new shocks in the rear.

Yeah that makes a ton of sense....Ofcourse there isn't a huge shortage of 4x4s. But why hack up a perfectly good 4x4 when you could sell it, buy a 2wd and have money left over to spend on a nice drop kit? Not to mention it is easier to drop a 2wd. Throw an lsd or locker in the rear and you have a perfect winter truck!

Well I didn't say I didn't want/use the 4x4, I just don't need the clearance.
Thanks for all the suggestions! What kind of shocks, just regular lowing shocks or just new ones? I don't know much about suspension. I've got HD shocks on the rear, but I don't really haul heavy stuff anymore, all my shocks were replaced last year.

measure at each wheel opening now do cutting and remove the blocks but leave the shocks on temp. until you measure the amount of drop then order your new shocks x amount shorter. I very seriously doubt there will a direct shock cross ref. to a 4x4 dodge ram lowered 2 inches in front so you may have to get in the parts book or shock website and search for them.

The rear shocks for a 2 wheeler should fit just right without the block.
