Friend did this once and prep is most important! The first time he peeled most of the chrome off and sanded the rest off, took forever and didnt take all of it off. He then painted it the color he wanted. Only lasted 1 month before the paint bubbled over just like the chrome. The bug splat also didnt help with this process. Eventually he just decided to put a new black grille and to settle with that.I honestly would just buy a different color grille unless you have the time and money to re-sand,re-paint, un-chrome,every time it needs it.

I sanded a chrome bumper, hammered out some dings and filled, and painted. It's been about a year, and is holding up like new.

Key is in the prep work.

Started sanding with 150 grit, then 200 grit. Used High build primer and another primer with adhesion promoter then PPG Omni line of paint.
