95 Oxidizer Special

We bought a 95 1500 360 4x4 from family. We're not sure how far we're going to go with the fixing. It has sentimental value, so for now we're getting it to where it's safe to drive. We bought it in 2014. So far we've replaced plugs, cap rotor, wires, track bar, power steering pump, front brakes, calipers, rotors, gas tank straps, fan belt, tensioner pulley, and a few things I'm not remembering. It was running well and handling decent. The transfer case wasn't working properly, the rear tires would spin, make a big bang as it tried to engage the front axle. I put the kit on the axle disconnect to keep it locked, thinking that was the problem. Must be in the tcase as that didn't fix it. Then the transmission went out. So it's pretty much been sitting around since then. The forward gears still kinda work so I've used it a few times.

That brings us to buying a used tcase last week and ordering a tranny from Carquest today:icon_woot:

It runs pretty good. Looking to the future, I guess I'll probably start with the kegger mod, new plenum gasket, clean/ replace IAC. It needs shocks and sway bar links also. One of the rear brakes has the line pinched off, so brake lines, drums, shoes, and wheel cylinders. Actually start with brakes first.

We put 265 tires from our Excursion on it and put new ones on the EX, so it has fairly decent tires. I got started doing bodywork on my daughter's 87 Chevy and kind of like it. So:icon_bricks: I may cut out the rockers and weld in some new ones. Then try to accumulate parts from there. ???

Well, it makes a good dog bed at least. :)

Looks like a project. Have you considered just rebuilding your t-case? Or were you able to find one pretty cheap?

I found a tcase for 125. When I checked the fluid, the one in the truck was completely empty. I don't know if it leaked while parked before we bought it, or was actually driven that way. I fixed the leak and filled it up. It looked like it had been apart before, so I feel better with a different one. It was a logging/ farming truck, so it hasn't had an easy life. I didn't see anything obviously wrong when I had the 2 covers off the back to reseal them.

My daughter took Holly for rides until the tranny went out.

I take it Holly is the dog? :D

LOL, yes Holly is the dog. Tessa liked going for rides in her grandpa's old pickup with Holly.

When the new tranny goes in, should I get rid of the check valve in the cooler line? Got a new seal for the rear drive shaft. Anything else to replace while it's apart? Maybe put the doohickybopper in place of the snap ring in the transfer case.

Most definitely. Get rid of that piece of crap. That is a trans killer. (check valve, just so we are clear.)

Talk to whomever is building your trans, and have them install the Sonax Sure Cure. Part of the installation is doing some alterations to the valve body, such that the torque converter will charge in park. (check valve was to prevent it from draining down.) Also, it will allow you to check fluid level in park. :)

The only local trans shop didn't have time until the end of the month or next month. I ordered one from our local Carquest. I trust the manager, he said he'd put one in his own vehicle, so I'm gonna try one. I'll run it awhile and then maybe put the Sure cure in myself. I had a transmission class when I went to tech so I should be able to do it. The transmission is here, so hopefully gets put in early next week. I couldn't get it before I left, so I'm having it put in while I'm gone.

I ordered a Trans case saver for the tcase also.
