Another must listen-to for the younger folk (anyone under 45) for Thanksgiving.

What I did today

Today I tore down a working 2002 46re I bought to replace my badly fragged 46re 2001. The old 46re was metal to metal in both the front and rear bands and drums, and the magnet and speed sensor were coated. That much metal must have played havoc with the piston bores and valve body.
New trans everything but the od and valve body taken apart and cleaned up. Clutches worn but having meat, front band on the edge of dying and rear band like new.
I intend to bypass radiator and use an auxiliary cooler. Flush lines.
Is the SKTFOD shift kit overkill for a vehicle that will see occasional tow duty? When used with a Dodge A727 A518 46RE A618 47RE Transmission Front Band Apply Super Servo (81032)?
Which is the recommended front band? Some say heavy dutu others kevlar, others still carbon It only a 360 v8 that will see occasional towing. My hard parts are all very good so I have the same question on frictions.
Have not yet figured out how to retrofit 3 pin trans switch for 5 pin. in later case. The sonnax directions are are lacking.

Alto red eagle clutches

Same for the bands? Are the valve body and pressure upgrades a reasonable bet?

HeyYou 12-15-2019 07:43 PM

Yeah, if they offer them, use their bands as well.

Shift kit looks to be designed for diesel? Though the 46 never came behind a diesel. :)

MonteC (our one-time resident trans guru) recommend the Sonnax Sure cure kit. It addresses a LOT of issues with the trans. Including charging the t/c in park.

Sonnax shift kit

The Sonnax kit needs $200 in jigs and fixtures.

I think they also offer a 'qwik kit', or some such. You also don't need to use all of it. :)

I've been very fortunate no trans or fuel pump on the 97 w/ 217,00 but can't seem to get the door not to sag, always seem to have cd player troubles. NO I'm not putting a whiz bang radio!! My 97 w/ 270,000 starting leaking trans fluid badly one day, did the trans. Have had RUSTY brake lines, I suppose the box or cab mounts are rotted out as well.

If anyone has ever wondered what living in ND is like, we had snow falling 8 days ago, today we broke the record high temperature of 95 by 3 degrees before noon. It is now 103 out and climbing.
